Founded in 2013 in Hong Kong, SMG was set up by a European family and a Chinese partner to capture opportunities in China. Since early on we have focused on building a health care ecosystem centered on the development and operation of Sino-foreign hospitals. Our strengths combine a global network, local project development and government relationship skills and overall project management expertise.
Fundamental Believes
The market opportunity is huge, given China’s size and continued growth in GDP. In health care this is compounded by an aging population and the shift from public to private service. Nevertheless, access to these opportunities in health care has been difficult, since the sector was not open to foreign investments until less than a decade ago. Consequently, there are no large multi-nationals established in China healthcare. And the decentralised city by city context requires a tailored, local approach for each location with few economies of scale, which has proven very difficult to execute by those who tried without a strong local team. By taking a slow but steady approach of making projects happen we strive to build credibility with local government and international partner executives. With expanding credibility, trust in our abilities expands as well and so do our projects.
Project Divisions
The first vertical of the SMG is in health care service, where SMG strives to establish Sino-foreign academic hospitals with GCP license. The first ones are the Shanghai Artemed Hospital, the Guangzhou Barcelona International Hospital and the Shanghai Pantheon Clinic. The second vertical of SMG is translational medicine, built around a class A biomedical laboratory. The third vertical is medical education, typically following a Joint Venture Institute approach, where top international and local medical universities partner up. The second and the third vertical combine usually in the same location where a Sino-foreign Hospital is established, creating a health-ecosystem, which is highly valued by local government.
